Summary of brief
The client is in her early thirties with two small children, aged two and four, with another on the way. The garden is extremely shallow and there is little room left after a space is allocated for her seating/entertaining area.
Bright colours and plants with scent are requested, but keeping things cosy and child-friendly are vital.
Her budget is for mid-range finishes. Soil is on the heavy side and I can foresee drainage being slow.
The final design
Small gardens offer great opportunity that is so often underused. I concentrated on adding key areas while linking them and making the small space feel larger than it is. Keeping the lines running horizontally and vertically through the space helped achive this. I chose to colour drench the back of the garden adding depth. The paths are wide enough for the clients children to walk with one an other hand in hand and the materials are chosen so walking barefoot in the garden is always an option.I feel this design utilises the space in a simple but effective way. A simple mix of perennials and some grasses and climbers keep the planting manageable but also colourful thought the spring and summer.
