The brief and base plan

Summary of brief

A married couple in their mid thirties. They have two young children and an elderly relative that will live with them as well as a boisterous Labrador. Their new home is rural and being built on an old field, soil neutral to alkaline. They drive electric cars which they want to park at the front of the house. They both have a stylish boho vibe. They emphasis a like for wild, cottage, "shabby-chic" and back to nature look. But colour choices suggested are creams, greens and rusty reds. they also like coastal native plants. and the sound of water.

They would also like the garden to be comfortable; family friendly; rough around the edges but also up-market. Their budget is fairly high-end. They are environmentally conscious and want to grow most of their own produce. They entertain outside and require a large dinning space and other entertaining areas.

The final design

The design has some key areas that I felt utilised the site and position of the house within it. The boundary wall and the views over the river were harnessed and addition of the car port and walled garden added a high end feel to the entrance while ticking off the list of requirement's from the client. I was very conscious in making the areas feeling different and I felt the size of the site made it possible to break up the space, with a native hedge being a great option for wildlife. The entertainment space is designed around large planting beds with seating areas all benefiting from the water focal point water feature. It also offers shade from tall trees and spills out onto a play lawn, designed as a shared space for all of the family.
